Statesville emergency, electric utility and street maintenance crews are preparing for potential impacts from high wind and heavy rain in this area.

Storm drains across the City have been inspected to make sure they are clear and free flowing in advance of the forecasted rainfall, said Public Works Director Scott Harrell. Residents can do their part by checking the curbs and storm drains in front of their homes. Refrain from placing yard waste on the curb this weekend.

Electric crews have already been dealing with downed trees due to saturated grounds in the past week, said Electric Utility Director Kent Houpe. The wet ground, coupled with the potential for high winds, may mean more downed trees and lines this weekend, explained Houpe. "It's important to report downed lines immediately and especially to stay away from them in case the lines are still live," he said.

Fire and police officials have met to prepare for potential areas of flooding and other emergency events that may occur because of rain and wind.

City crews are also making sure their tree removal and cleanup equipment is ready and in working order.
Statesville City officials offer these reminders in preparation for possible storm problems and emergencies:
1. Do not call 911 unless it is a life threatening emergency.
2. Do not cross flooded roads. "Don't Drown - Turn Around".
3. Report flooded areas to the Police at 704-878-3406.
4. Report downed trees that are blocking streets to 704-878-3406.
5. Report electrical outages and downed lines to 704-878-3479. Leave your address.
6. Stay away from downed lines.
7. If a power line falls across a car that you're in, stay in the car. If you MUST get out of the car due to a fire or other immediate life-threatening situation, jump clear of the car and be sure that no part of your body is touching the car when your feet touch the ground.
8. Have food on hand, keep your cell phone charged and check your flashlight batteries in case of a power outage.
9. Monitor local radio and TV stations for updated weather and emergency information.
