Entries for November 2011

Statesville City trucks can be seen all over town, but how often does anyone get to look inside any of these unusual vehicles and get to talk to someone who operates them?

The City of Statesville is proud to present "Touch-A-Truck" on Saturday, Nov. 5 at the annual Pumpkin Fest in Downtown Statesville.

We'll be there with lots of City vehicles the children can climb on. It's free! Parent supervision is required and cameras are highly recommended!  Look for us on S. Center St. near Court St.

Children will be able to get up close and behind the wheel of a:

Fire Truck
Recycling Truck
Electric Utility Truck
Sewer Maintenance Camera Van
Police Vehicle
Several RTV vehicles
Tractor and Bush hog
Street Patch Truck

Statesville Police Chief Tom Anderson was all smiles Thursday with the announcement that veteran police Captains Eddie Rimmer and Mike Watts have been selected as Statesville’s Assistant Police Chiefs.  “This is a historic day for the Statesville PD,” said Anderson.  “Not only because this is the first time Statesville will have two assistant police chiefs, but because of the high caliber of officers who are taking on these newly created positions.  I am very excited about this selection.”

Asst. Chief Rimmer is assigned to oversee Administration and Asst. Chief Watts now leads Department Operations.  Together, they have more than 40 years of experience with the Statesville Police Department.

Statesville City Council approved the creation of the two positions earlier this month after Assistant Chief Bill Halliburton resigned to accept the Chief’s position with the Albemarle Police Department.

The promotions are effective Nov. 17, 2011, and come after what Anderson described as, “a lengthy competitive interview process” that involved six captain candidates, all from within the Statesville Police Department.  Anderson and Assistant City Manager Lynn Smyth facilitated the interview process.  “We are very pleased that all of the candidates did exceptionally well and reflected a command staff that is well trained and experienced.  I look forward to our future together,” said Anderson.

The 10th Annual Statesville Tree Lighting is scheduled for Tuesday, November 29, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Statesville Civic Center.  Santa arrives at 6:30 p.m. and turns on the lights to get things started.

Afterwards, children can participate in a variety of free activities including an outdoor hayride, a train ride, carousel, bouncy house, movie theater and balloon artist.  The main attraction, however, will be Santa, with whom children can visit throughout the evening.  Professional photos will be available for $6, but parents are encouraged to take their own photos as well.

Free apple cider and snacks will be available.

The public is invited to attend and enjoy Statesville’s holiday kick-off.
