Curbside leaf collection in Statesville has begun.  Helping with efforts this year is a new automated leaf collection truck that has reduced the number of temporary employees needed for this seasonal work.  The new truck requires only one employee and is controlled by the driver of the truck from inside the cab.

The City is divided into four sections, with crews working in a specific area each week.  The schedule for November is:

  • Nov. 25-30: Section 2 (east of S. Center St. and Shelton Ave. and south of E. Broad St.
  • Dec. 2-7: Section 3 (east of N. Center St. and north of E. Broad St.

Residents who place their leaves on the curb for collection are asked to follow the following guidelines:

  • Loose leaves can be raked and piled on the curb.  A city ordinance prohibits loose leaves from extending into the street or onto sidewalks so as to impede traffic.  The leaves should not cover water meters or fire hydrants.
  • Have leaves on the curb by 7 am on Monday to ensure collection when it is your scheduled week.
  • Rocks, limbs, and other yard waste matter should not be included in leaf piles due to the potential for damaging the City leaf collection machines and delaying the collection of leaves.
  • Citizens are asked to please remember to remove all vehicles and obstructions from the curb area to permit staff access to leaves for removal.
  • During curbside leaf collection, do not place leaves in trash bags for pick-up

The leaf crews cover the entire city before returning to an area.  Leaves are not picked up on the same schedule as the garbage and recycling collection schedules.  Temporary workers are hired during leaf season to make sure that no sanitation services are affected by the leaf collection.  An area is served about three times during a four-month period.  If you have questions about leaf collection, call 704-878-3415.

Weekly notification of where the trucks are working will be posted on the city government channel on cable channel 20, on the City’s website, and on the Sunday night “Hello Statesville” call-out.
