Statesville is celebrating the completion of Phase I of the Downtown Streetscape this Friday, May 17, at noon, with a ribbon cutting, cake and lemonade, balloons and what every party needs – live music!

The Statesville High School Blue & Grey Singers will perform a variety of pop and acapella songs in front of Groucho’s Deli beginning about 11:30 a.m.   A brief program will begin at noon on the square, followed by an official “traffic-stopping” ribbon cutting about 12:15 p.m.

Everyone is invited to bring their lunch downtown and enjoy live music along the new streetscape patio areas.  On Center St., you’ll hear musician Jeff Brown in front of Westmoreland Antiques; Brooke & Carter in front of Sweet Things Bakery; and Silver Strings (flute and harp) on the northwest corner of the square.  The bluegrass music of Jewels Harp can be enjoyed on E. Broad St. in front of Hop’s Place Restaurant.  Music will continue from about 12:15 until 1:30 p.m.

Free cake and lemonade will be served at the square as long as it lasts.

Nasa Astronaut Tom Marshburn and his two crew members successfully landed their spacecraft in southern Kazakhstant at 10:31 p.m. (EDT) Monday.  Russian recovery teams were on hand to help the crew exit the spacecraft and adjust to gravity after 146 days in space.

He has been a part of the Expedition 35 crew, living and working in the International Space Station since December, 2012.

Probably one of the biggest challenges of the mission came just days before Marsburn’s return as he and colleague Chris Cassidy performed a spacewalk to resolve an ammonia leak.  It will take weeks or longer to be sure the leak was stopped, but the ground crew is optimistic that changing out the ammonia pump control box has resolved the issue.

Marshburn has performed space walks before, but never one in such a hurry.  Now, he and his crew are in the final hours of preparation for the journey to earth.

Coverage of the farewells, hatch closure and undocking will be broadcast on NASA TV beginning at 3:30 p.m. (ET)  The crew will travel in the Soyuz TMA-07M and is scheduled to land near Dzhezkazgan, Kazakhstan at 10:30 p.m. (ET)

Marshburn’s most recent tweet reported: “Last night in space. Surreal. Looking forward to experiencing re-entry tomorrow!”

Marshburn was born in Statesville, NC, and has enthusiastically claimed our City as his hometown. He returned to Statesville in 2009 to celebrate and talk about his first shuttle mission that included three spacewalks.

While he was here, Statesville honored him by titling the City as the official “Hometown of NASA Astronaut Dr. Thomas H. Marshburn.” Many roadside welcome signs around Statesville now include that slogan.
