The Bentley Community Center will host an open house Sunday afternoon, January 10, 2-3 p.m., to celebrate 20 years of serving the south Statesville community.  The center will also get a chance to show off its recent renovations that include the creation of a game room, computer lab and small fitness center.

The Bentley Center, located at 1410 Third St., was the result of a special citizen advisory committee, created in 1993 by Statesville City Council and tasked with the responsibility of recommending solutions to problems in the neighborhood.  The committee recommended the construction of the community center, which was approved and funded in the 1994-1995 budget.  Council also voted to name the facility after Statesville Mayor Ralph L. Bentley, an advocate of the community recreation facility during his tenure, 1985-1993.  It officially opened on Jan. 10, 1996.

In 1995, residents were surveyed as to the types of programs they would like to see offered.  "We continue to listen to the residents and especially the program participants," said Recreation and Parks Director Brent Cornelison, "in order to evolve and meet the changing needs of this growing community."

Center Director Eric Heaggans has overseen the operations of the 12,500-square foot facility for nearly all of its 20-year history.  He is particularly excited about the addition of new fitness equipment and computers, as well as the fresh paint and sprucing up that has taken place.

The Bentley Center is open daily for afterschool enhancement programs and fitness and sports programs.  It is also used for senior groups, festivals, special events and church programs.

"Our goal Sunday," said Cornelison, "is to unveil all the changes and renew our commitment to being a vital part of the neighborhood Bentley Center serves."

The public is invited to tour the facility on Sunday.  Bentley Center staff will be on hand to answer questions and hand out program and facility use information.
