Statesville City utility customers have a new way to pay their monthly utility bills right at their fingertips.  The Voice Utility System (VUS) lets customers use the phone keypad to pay their bill and obtain a variety of information about their account.

By calling 704-878-3564, the new system can be accessed 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  "We are always looking for ways to improve customer service," said Lisa Salmon, Statesville Finance Director.  "The convenience of paying a bill or checking a balance without having to come to our offices is something we know our customers will use.  They asked for it and we heard them."

Customers are prompted in both English and Spanish on which numbers on the phone to press to: pay their utility bill; check their account balance; verify their last payment; confirm the most recent amount billed; check billing and payment history; and request a payment extension.

There is an option to talk to a customer service representative about other inquiries, M-F, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.  The system also allows customers to have a paper copy of their account information faxed to them.

"We have a high volume of utility customers who come to the Customer Services Department  to pay their bill in person.  The lines can get long and we know it can get frustrating," explained Salmon.  "We expect to see those lines decrease as more and more customers find out they can stay at home and pay by phone."

The Voice Utility System only accepts debit cards, MasterCard, Visa and Discover credit cards for payment.  The service can be used whenever it is needed without having to register and there is no service fee.

It is necessary for the customer to have their account number to access the system.  "The account number is located on the utility bill and consists of two sets of numbers separated with a dash," explained Salmon.  The customer will be asked to key in the Customer ID number which are the numbers located on the left of the dash and press #.  Then they will key in the Location ID number which are the numbers located on the right of the dash and press #.

"The service benefits all customers," said Salmon.  "Anytime a customer can't get into the office to pay or pay online, the Voice Utility System is there.  It's great for people who work out of town or who are on vacation.  We expect that it will become a valuable service for many of our customers."

The Voice Utility System is one of several ways utility payments can be made: by mail; online at; bank draft; or in person at 301 S. Center St.
