During Wednesday’s Town Hall Day event in Raleigh, Statesville City Council member William Morgan accepted a “Great Places” award from the N.C. Chapter of the American Planning Association.  The organization recognized Statesville’s intersection of Center Street and Broad Street as one of North Carolina’s “Great Main Streets.”

Rep. Rena Turner was also on hand to represent Statesville during the award presentation.

Great Places in North Carolina is an awards program created in 2012 by the APA-NC to highlight North Carolina’s Great Places and the communities and people that have created them. Six communities in North Carolina were recognized as Great Places this year. These communities represent some of the best planning efforts in North Carolina, and serve as models for visioning, partnerships, and collaboration, according to the APA-NC press release.

Statesville Assistant Planning Director Sherry Ashley explained that “the square” was selected because it represents the “center of the community’s values, intersecting with the city’s broad dreams for a dynamic future.”

Morgan expressed much pride in Statesville’s success at creating one of the finest Main Streets in the state.
