Statesville City Manager Larry Pressley announced Monday that Spencer Lee has been named Fire Chief of the Statesville Fire Department.  Lee, 41, is currently the Deputy Chief for Fire & Emergency Services for the City of Jacksonville, NC, Public Safety Department.  He will begin his duties in Statesville on March 6, 2017.

"Chief Lee has experience in many of the areas the Statesville Fire Department will find itself dealing with in the future," said Pressley.  "He has lead the Jacksonville department through two cycles of re-accreditation and understands the importance of maintaining a department's accreditation.  He oversaw the construction of a public safety facility, working with police and fire to accommodate both department's needs.  This, too, is something, we will be asking Lee to work on in Statesville as it relates to our plans to construct a public safety facility on Shelton Ave."

Lee is from the eastern North Carolina area of Duplin and Lenoir Counties.  His first professional firefighting job began in 1996 when he went to work for the Kinston City Fire Department and he's never looked back.  In 2002, he moved to Carteret County where he worked for Atlantic Beach Fire Department and Western Carteret Fire & EMS, where he became the Assistant Chief with specific duties in training and administrative reporting, as well as handling the chief responsibilities when needed.

From there, he joined the Jacksonville Fire Department in 2008 as the Division Chief of Training and Standards and was later promoted to Deputy Chief in 2010.  When Jacksonville merged its administrative operations of Fire, Police and Emergency Services to one Public Safety Department, Lee was named Deputy Chief (the top official) of the Fire & Emergency Services.

He has an associate degree in Emergency Medical Sciences from Carteret Community College and is a graduate of the University of Mt. Olive with a bachelor's degree in Business Administration.

Lee is looking forward to moving his family to Statesville, "closer to the mountains where we enjoy fishing and even tubing."  I am eager to begin serving the citizens of Statesville," he added.

He and his wife have four daughters, two of them still living at home.

Lee said he hopes to use his partnering skills to strengthen relationships with local agencies and departments, and enhance firefighter safety and interoperability in the framework and procedures used in emergency communications.
