Statesville City Manager Ron Smith has announced the selection of Richard Griggs as the new director for the Statesville Recreation and Parks Department.  Griggs, 38, has been with the department since 2009, and has served as Program Director since 2012.  He will begin his new duties effective August 13, 2018.  Griggs is replacing Brent Cornelison who left in April of this year to become the Town Manager of Elkin.

“Richard has such a heart for recreation and brings a lot of creativity to the position," said Smith in making the announcement. " He is very knowledgeable about the community and trends in recreation.  Richard has been a great collaborator with other organizations and I look forward to seeing the different ways he will grow this department.”

A graduate of Statesville High School, Griggs earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management from North Carolina State University.  He is a Certified Park and Recreation Professional and a Senior Fellow with the American Leadership Forum.  Locally, Griggs is active in the United Way of Iredell County, serving as a board member and past President and Campaign Chair.  He also serves on the Iredell County Partnership for Young Children North Carolina Pre-K Council, the Leadership Statesville Advisory Board, and the Get Fit Iredell Community Fitness Challenge Program. Griggs is on the board of the Full Bloom Film Festival and is a member of the Rotary Club of Statesville. He and his wife, Jennifer, live in Statesville and have two children.

"I'm thrilled with the opportunity to lead an already great department and amazing staff," said Griggs. "We'll work hard to continue our progress in improving the quality of life for the residents of Statesville, and strengthening our community through parks and play."

The Recreation and Parks Department oversees the maintenance of more than a dozen parks, the greenway system and three recreations centers, including the Fitness and Activity Center and Leisure Pool.  In addition, the department manages three cemeteries and maintenance of the Statesville Regional Airport. It is in charge of a variety of sports leagues, and fitness and recreation programming for all ages.  Special events, such as the Fourth of July Fireworks Celebration, Art in the Park and Special Olympics, are also managed by this department.
