City News

Statesville is celebrating the 130th birthday (anniversary) of Statesville Electric Utilities.  On February 4, 1889, Statesville became the first city in North Carolina to operate its own power company.

On that night, 130 years ago, a crowd gathered on the unpaved streets of Downtown Statesville.  A switch was pulled and Statesville’s first electric street lights illuminated the tiny downtown area for about two hours.

This was the beginning of public power in North Carolina.  Today, Statesville is recognized as the oldest public power community in the state and the tenth oldest in the nation. That first electric power plant was located just east of Fourth Creek Cemetery on Water St.

Happy 130th Birthday Statesville Electric Utilities!!  The Electric Utilities Department will recognize this important event throughout the month.
