Help Protect Our Waterways: Volunteer to Mark Storm Drains in Your Neighborhood

Last Updated 12/31/2024Posted in Stormwater, Latest City News, Homepage

The Stormwater Division is excited to offer a new volunteer opportunity for citizens who want to make a difference in their community. You can now assist the City of Statesville in marking storm drains in your neighborhood, helping us spread an important message: Only Rain Down the Drain!

Why Storm Drain Marking Matters

Stormwater runoff is a natural process, but urban development changes how rainwater interacts with the environment.

  • Before development, much of the rainfall soaks into the ground, thanks to vegetation and tree canopies.
  • After development, less water infiltrates into the soil, leading to increased surface runoff.
This excess stormwater runoff can:
  • Contribute to flooding and safety hazards.
  • Cause property damage.
  • Lead to soil and stream erosion.
  • Degrade water quality and stream health.
Marking storm drains reminds everyone that these drains lead directly to local waterways and are not a place for trash, chemicals, or other pollutants. Keeping them clean is essential for maintaining healthy streams, rivers, and the overall environment.

How You Can Help

By volunteering to mark storm drains in your neighborhood, you’ll be playing a key role in protecting our community’s waterways. The city will provide all the materials you need, including materials and instructions. It's a simple, impactful way to educate your neighbors and help reduce pollutants in our stormwater system.

What to Expect

  • Materials Provided: The Stormwater Division will supply everything you need for the project.
  • Flexible Schedule: You can volunteer at your own convenience.
  • Family-Friendly: This is a great opportunity for families, scout troops, or community groups to get involved.
