It’s Official: Winter Weather is on the Way, and the Kids (Big and Small) Are Excited!

Last Updated 1/8/2025Posted in Latest City News, Homepage

After more than a week of watching the forecast and hoping for a snow day, Statesville is bracing for a significant winter weather event this weekend! Snow, ice, and freezing rain are expected to arrive Friday and continue into Saturday. While it’s the perfect excuse to enjoy a snowball fight or a cozy day at home, it’s also a time to stay safe and responsible on the roads.

What to Expect

The Dreaded Mix: This storm brings a messy combination of snow, rain, and ice, with icy road conditions expected.

Cold Ground Temps: With road surfaces already cold, anything that falls will stick. Drivers should be extra cautious.

A Reminder from SPD and SFD

We get it—snow brings out the big kid in all of us, but please, no hot dogging or doing donuts on the streets! The Statesville Police Department and Statesville Fire Department would prefer not to respond to preventable accidents caused by reckless driving. Let’s keep the fun off the roads and ensure everyone stays safe.

How to Prepare

For the Roads:

  • Only travel if absolutely necessary.
  • Check your tires, top off your gas tank, and pack an emergency kit with blankets, water, snacks, a flashlight, and a phone charger.
  • Drive slowly, increase following distances, and avoid sudden stops or sharp turns.

At Home:

  • Stock up on essentials like food, water, and batteries.
  • Insulate exposed pipes and make sure your heating system is ready.
  • Keep an eye on elderly or vulnerable neighbors who may need assistance.

What the City is Doing

The City of Statesville’s Public Works Department began treating roads today (January 8th) to get ahead of icy conditions. Crews will remain on standby throughout the weekend to address any issues that arise.

Reporting Issues

  • Icy Roads or Flooding: Call the Statesville Police Department at 704-878-3406.
  • Power Outages: Report to the Electric Utilities Outage Line at 704-878-3419.
  • Emergencies: Call 911.

Let’s make this winter storm a safe and memorable one for all the right reasons. Stay safe, drive responsibly, and enjoy the beauty of winter—just keep the donuts in the bakery, not on the roads! Stay tuned for updates from the City of Statesville on conditions and services.
