Understanding and Addressing Black Mold in Faucet Screens: An Environmental Issue

Last Updated 9/11/2024Posted in Latest City News, Homepage

Welcome to the intriguing (yet sometimes frustrating) world of microorganisms! If you're noticing dark gray or black stains or slimy residues in your toilet, sink faucet, or shower head, rest assured—this is not a water quality issue, and the water is perfectly safe.

The current warm temperatures create an ideal environment for these bacteria to grow. While it may be more of an aesthetic nuisance, we understand the frustration.

To remedy the issue, we recommend the following cleaning routine:

  1. Remove sink aerators and shower heads: Soak them in a mild bleach solution for about 30 minutes.
  2. Use a toothbrush: Scrub any crevices to ensure thorough cleaning.
  3. Toilets: Frequent cleaning or adding a slow-dissolving bleach tablet to the tank can help control the mold.

As temperatures drop, this problem tends to subside naturally.

For further guidance, please refer to the literature shared with the City by the state here. Learn more about Water Resources on our website here.

By staying proactive, you can help minimize this nuisance and maintain a clean, healthy water system in your home.
