Know What’s Below – Call 811 Before You Dig

Last Updated 8/7/2025Posted in Latest City News, Homepage

August 11, 2025 (Safe Digging Day) serves as an annual reminder to always contact 811 before starting any digging project.

Whether you’re planting a tree, installing a fence, or breaking ground on a large construction job, calling 811 first is a free and easy way to prevent damaging underground utilities.

What is 811?

811 is the national “Call Before You Dig” number. In North Carolina, calling 811 connects you with NC 811, which coordinates with utility companies to mark the location of buried lines - such as gas, electric, water, and cable - on your property.

How It Works

How it Works

  • Submit a request at least 3 full working days before you dig
  • Utility companies will send out locators to mark underground lines using flags or paint
  • Dig carefully, respecting all markings

This process helps prevent utility outages, property damage, injuries, and potential fines. It’s not just a smart move—it’s the law.

Every Project Counts

Even small projects can lead to big problems if you dig without knowing what’s below. Always call 811 before you start. It’s fast, free, and essential for your safety and the safety of those around you.
