Black History Month 2026

February 2026

WHEREAS, February is recognized as Black History Month, a time to honor, celebrate, and reflect upon the rich history, culture, and contributions of African Americans; and

WHEREAS, in 1926, Dr. Carter G. Woodson, a distinguished scholar and historian, established the observance of African American History to highlight the vital contributions of African Americans to the development and progress of the United States; and

WHEREAS, African Americans have made enduring and transformative contributions in every field of endeavor, including the arts, sciences, education, business, public service, and civic life; and

WHEREAS, the City of Statesville recognizes both the struggles and the triumphs of the Black community and reaffirms its commitment to advancing equity, inclusion, and justice for all residents; and

WHEREAS, this observance provides an opportunity for all citizens to deepen their understanding of African American history, heritage, and culture, and to reflect on the continued pursuit of equality and opportunity for all people;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, J. Douglas Hendrix, Mayor of the City of Statesville, do hereby proclaim the month of February 2026 as Black History Month in the City of Statesville and encourage all citizens to observe this month with appropriate programs, activities, and ceremonies that honor the legacy and contributions of African Americans.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF I have set my Hand and caused the Great Seal of the City of Statesville to be affixed this 16th day of February 2026.
