On June 1, 2024, the Statesville Fire Department (SFD) proudly participated in Smoke Alarm Saturday, a critical one-day, statewide smoke alarm canvassing event organized in conjunction with the NC Office of State Fire Marshal (NCOSFM). This annual event is dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of having working smoke alarms in homes and enhancing community safety through education and action.

Smoke Alarm Saturday brings fire departments across North Carolina together on the first Saturday in June to educate communities on the necessity of having functional smoke alarms. Working smoke alarms are essential for early fire detection, providing families with the precious time needed to escape during a fire emergency.

This year, the Statesville Fire Department received a grant from the NCOSFM, which provided 30 smoke alarms for distribution and installation. SFD members exceeded expectations by installing a total of 33 smoke alarms and replacing 40 batteries in existing alarms throughout the Statesville community. These efforts significantly enhance the safety of numerous households, offering residents greater peace of mind.

In addition to installing smoke alarms, the Statesville Fire Department used this opportunity to educate residents on fire safety during their home visits. Firefighters shared crucial information on fire prevention, escape planning, and the importance of regular smoke alarm maintenance. This educational component empowers residents to take proactive steps in protecting their homes and loved ones.

Working smoke alarms are proven lifesavers. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the risk of dying in a home fire is cut in half in homes with working smoke alarms. By participating in Smoke Alarm Saturday, the Statesville Fire Department emphasizes its commitment to reducing fire-related injuries and fatalities in the community.

The Statesville Fire Department is dedicated to ongoing community engagement and education. Initiatives like Smoke Alarm Saturday are crucial in our mission to safeguard the residents of Statesville. We are grateful for the support from the NCOSFM and the opportunity to make a tangible difference in our community’s safety.

We encourage all residents to ensure their smoke alarms are in working order. Regular testing and maintenance are key to effective fire safety.
