On January 13, 2025, Statesville Fire Chief Glenn Kurfees delivered a comprehensive overview of the department’s 2024 achievements, challenges, and goals during the Statesville City Council Meeting. Key Highlights:

  1. Operational Achievements:

    • The Statesville Fire Department responded to 6,969 calls in 2024, marking a significant increase from prior years.
    • Achieved ISO Class 1 certification in 2023, the highest possible rating for fire departments.
    • Maintains four fire stations covering 24.86 square miles, with plans to optimize response times further.
  2. Equipment and Facilities:

    • Recently acquired updated apparatus, including a refurbished ARF truck and a multi-purpose UTV for special events and challenging terrains.
    • Progress on replacing Engine 3, with delivery expected in 2026.
  3. Community Engagement and Education:

    • Delivered fire and life safety programs to over 12,000 residents, trained 654 individuals in fire extinguisher use, and installed 27 smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
    • Initiated CPR training programs and expanded fire safety education through a dedicated full-time educator.
  4. Data-Driven Decisions:

    • Enhanced the department’s ability to justify operational and funding requests through detailed data analysis and response time benchmarks.
    • Urban and rural response times are tracked and continuously improved to meet critical benchmarks.
  5. Goals for 2025:

    • Expand training programs for staff and citizens.
    • Strengthen community engagement through safety education and outreach.
    • Enhance employee retention by focusing on physical and mental well-being.
