Reliable Public Power Provider Week

Reliable Public Power Provider (RP3) Week (July 13-17, 2026) is a national celebration recognizing the public power utilities committed to providing safe, reliable, and efficient electric service to the communities they serve. Across the country, publicly owned utilities are recognized for the work they do every day to keep the lights on, strengthen their communities, and prepare for the future.

For the City of Statesville, this week is especially meaningful.

Powering Statesville Since 1889

Statesville Public Power isn't just another electric utility. We are North Carolina's oldest publicly owned electric utility and proudly hold the distinction of being the first public power community in the state.

On February 4, 1889, the City of Statesville made history when the switch was flipped to illuminate downtown streets with electric lights for the very first time. What began as a replacement for gas streetlamps became one of the most significant moments in our city's history, laying the foundation for more than 137 years of reliable electric service.

Since that historic day, Statesville Public Power has remained locally owned, locally operated, and dedicated to serving our community. Learn more about the history of Public Power in Statesville, NC here.

Reliability Starts with Local People

Electricity powers nearly every part of our daily lives - from homes and schools to hospitals, businesses, and public safety services.

That's why reliability isn't just something we strive for - it's our responsibility.

Our crews work year-round to:

  • Maintain and upgrade electric infrastructure
  • Prepare for severe weather before it arrives
  • Respond quickly during outages Invest in modern technologies that strengthen system reliability
  • Plan for future growth as Statesville continues to expand

While much of this work happens behind the scenes, it's what helps ensure dependable service day after day.

Your Neighbors. Your Public Power Team.

One of the greatest advantages of public power is that the people serving you are also part of the community they serve. The employees of Statesville Public Power live here, work here, raise their families here, and experience the same storms, challenges, and celebrations as every other resident.

When severe weather impacts our area, our crews are already here. When new neighborhoods or businesses need power, we're here. When improvements are needed to keep our electric system strong for future generations, we're already planning ahead.

Being local means we don't just serve the community - we're invested in its success.

A National Standard of Excellence

Reliable Public Power Provider Week is organized by the American Public Power Association to recognize utilities that demonstrate excellence in operating safe, reliable, and efficient electric systems. The RP3 designation recognizes utilities for their commitment to four key areas:

  • Reliability
  • Safety
  • Workforce Development
  • System Improvement

Statesville Public Power is proud to be recognized among public power utilities across the nation that are committed to delivering exceptional service and continuously improving operations for the benefit of the communities they serve.

More Than Electricity

Public power is about more than delivering electricity. It's about investing in the community, supporting economic development, providing dependable service, and ensuring decisions are made with local residents in mind.

Every pole inspected, every transformer upgraded, every outage restored, and every improvement made helps build a stronger, more resilient Statesville.

Thank You for Trusting Statesville Public Power

During Reliable Public Power Provider Week, we want to recognize the dedicated employees who work around the clock to safely deliver electricity to our community.

When the lights stay on, most people never have to think about the work happening behind the scenes - and that's exactly how we like it.

For more than a century, Statesville Public Power has remained committed to providing safe, affordable, reliable, and local electric service.

Reliable. Affordable. Local. Powering Statesville since 1889.
