Craig Alan Blackwell, Jr. Sentenced for Shooting Incident in June 2023


Statesville, NC - The Statesville Police Department is pleased to announce a significant development in the case involving Craig Alan Blackwell Jr., following a shooting incident on June 24, 2023.

On that day, officers responded to a distress call at Iredell Memorial Hospital concerning a victim who had sustained a gunshot wound to the stomach. It was later determined that the shooting occurred at 245 Garfield Street. The victim was transported to Wake Forest Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem with life-threatening injuries.

As the investigation progressed, it became evident that Craig Alan Blackwell Jr., a 30-year-old resident of Statesville, was allegedly involved in the shooting. Arrest warrants were issued for Blackwell Jr. on charges of Attempted Murder, Firearm by Felon, and Discharging a Firearm in the City Limits.

On July 3, 2023, the Iredell County Sheriff's Department responded to a call regarding a trespasser on Greenbriar Road, outside the city limits. The individual apprehended, who initially refused to disclose his identity, was later identified as Craig Alan Blackwell Jr. He was brought before a magistrate and served with the outstanding arrest warrants, in addition to being granted a $1,000,000 secured bond.

Today, February 7, 2024, Craig Alan Blackwell Jr. appeared before Iredell Superior Court to enter his plea. Blackwell Jr. pleaded guilty to the charges, including Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill Inflicting Serious Injury (AWDWIKISI), two counts of Possession of Firearm by a Felon, and Assault by Strangulation.

Honorable Superior Court Judge Cutchin presided over the hearing and imposed a sentence of 127-165 months in prison.
