A Friendly Reminder About Bikes on Downtown Sidewalks

Downtown Statesville is full of activity, with people walking between shops, restaurants, and businesses throughout the day. To help keep everyone safe, the city would like to remind residents and visitors that bicycles, skateboards, roller skates, scooters, and similar devices should not be ridden on sidewalks within the downtown tax district.

Why? Because people walk out of businesses, turn corners, and step onto the sidewalk without expecting a bike coming their way. We would really prefer that no one gets accidentally run over while stepping out for coffee or lunch.

If you're riding through downtown, please hop off and walk your bike while using the sidewalk. It only takes a moment and helps keep things safe and comfortable for everyone enjoying downtown.

City ordinance (Sec. 12-329) prohibits riding bicycles, skating, or using similar devices on sidewalks within the downtown tax district.

Violations may result in a fine of up to $15 per offense under North Carolina law. And while we can issue tickets, we’d much rather avoid the paperwork and just ask everyone to follow the rule.

Thanks for helping keep Downtown Statesville safe, welcoming, and pedestrian-friendly for everyone.
