Remembering Officer James Ross White on National Peace Officers Memorial Day

March 18, 1934: Officer James Ross White, age 43, was killed in the line of duty while investigating a traffic accident at the intersection of South Race Street and West Sharpe Street. He was struck by a hit and run vehicle and died shortly thereafter. The driver, Noah Hayes, was captured a short time later and admitted he was driving the vehicle. He was later sentenced to four years in prison.

Today, on National Peace Officers Memorial Day (May 15, 2026), we pause to honor and remember the brave law enforcement officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their communities and our country. Established by Congress in 1962, this day serves as a time to pay tribute to those who gave their lives in the line of duty and to express our gratitude for the officers who continue to serve on the front lines each day.

For the Statesville Police Department, this day carries special meaning as we remember Officer James Ross White - the only SPD officer to lose his life in the line of duty.

On March 18, 1934, Officer White, age 43, was investigating a traffic accident at the intersection of South Race Street and West Sharpe Street when he was struck by a hit-and-run vehicle. He died shortly thereafter from his injuries. The driver was later captured and convicted. He had served with the department for three years. Officer White was a husband and a father, survived by his wife and two children. His commitment to protecting others reflects the courage and dedication shared by law enforcement officers across generations.

Nearly a century later, Officer White’s sacrifice is not forgotten. His dedication, courage, and service remain a lasting part of our department’s history.

Today, we honor Officer White and all fallen officers across this nation. We also extend our deepest appreciation to the men and women who continue to serve and protect our communities every day.
