Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month: Sharing the Road Saves Lives

May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of safely sharing the road with motorcyclists. As the weather warms up, more riders take to the streets, making it especially important for all motorists to stay alert and practice safe driving habits.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), motorcyclists are significantly more vulnerable on the road. In recent years, thousands of motorcyclists have been killed in traffic crashes annually across the United States, with many of these incidents involving other vehicles. Because motorcycles are smaller and less visible than cars, they can be easily overlooked - especially in blind spots or at intersections.

What Drivers Can Do:

• Look twice, save a life. Always double-check for motorcycles when changing lanes or turning.
• Give motorcycles space. Maintain a safe following distance and allow riders full use of their lane.
• Use signals early. Clear communication helps motorcyclists anticipate your actions.
• Stay focused. Avoid distractions and keep your attention on the road at all times.

What Riders Can Do:

• Wear protective gear. Helmets, gloves, and protective clothing can significantly reduce injury risk.
• Stay visible. Use headlights, wear bright or reflective gear, and position yourself where drivers can see you.
• Follow traffic laws. Obey speed limits and ride predictably.
• Never ride impaired. Alcohol and drugs greatly increase the risk of a crash.
