Emergency Infrastructure Restoration: Sinkhole Repair
Tradd and E Front St

Project Update: September 26, 2025

The sinkhole repair is complete, and the intersection has been reopened.

The DELCO project for the new Parking Deck and Statesville Police Department Expansion continues at the corner of Tradd Street and E. Front Street. At this time, Tradd Street from E. Front Street to Sharpe Street remains closed for the crane set up scheduled for the week of September 29, 2025.

Project Update: August 26, 2025

Despite a few unforeseen challenges, steady progress is being made on the Downtown Statesville sinkhole repair project. The stormwater drain line installation is complete, and crews are now working on replacing sewer lines along Tradd Street toward the Police Department. The contractor anticipates the project will be substantially completed by mid-September.

Project Update: August 15, 2025

The sinkhole repair project is now expected to be completed by mid-September. As work progressed, crews uncovered additional issues that required immediate attention. These additional issues included an aging waterline which needed valves installed in order for work to continue. The valve installation took longer than anticipated. This unforeseen work along with the recent rain have contributed to delays. Crews are continuing work to address these challenges and restore the roadway as quickly and safely as possible.

Project Update: August 1, 2025

The Downtown Statesville sinkhole project is on track for substantial completion by mid to late August.

After a brief delay last week for necessary water line valve work, crews are back in action and making strong progress. The current focus is completing the storm drain installation, which is a key step before connecting additional lines.

Once the storm drain work is finished, crews will move on to the remaining sewer line installation.

Thank you for your continued patience as we move closer to wrapping up this important repair.

Project Update: July 15, 2025

Work continues at the intersection of Tradd Street and E. Front Street as crews make progress on the downtown sinkhole repair. During excavation, crews encountered several unexpected underground conflicts that have extended the original repair timeline.

  • Progress Update: E. Front Street has now reopened from S. Center Street to the front of Nicholson Funeral Home, providing improved access to that area. However, the intersection of Tradd Street and E. Front Street remains closed.
  • Unforeseen Issues: A water line was discovered in the path of the new storm drain installation. To address this, the City will begin work to relocate the waterline this week. Once in place, the contractor will continue with the storm drain repair and complete the job.

While this additional work may delay the overall completion date, it’s a necessary fix that will prevent future disruptions - and it's more efficient to address it now while the intersection is already under construction.

We appreciate the community’s continued patience and will share further updates as progress continues.

Project Update: June 25, 2025

Progress continues on the Downtown Statesville Sinkhole repair project. During excavation, a few unexpected underground elements were discovered beneath the roadway. Fortunately, none of these findings have significantly impacted the work, and crews have been able to adapt and move forward without major delays.

Due to recent weather impacts, the contractor has requested and received a six-day extension to the original contract timeframe. The new substantial completion date is now set for July 17, 2025.

We appreciate the community’s continued patience as we work toward safely reopening this section of Downtown. For ongoing updates, please check back here.

Downtown Sinkhole Repair Update

Update: June 2, 2025

Excavation work officially began today at the sinkhole repair site near the intersection of Tradd Street and E. Front Street. Crews started digging near the manhole closest to Salisbury Road after completing most of the asphalt saw cutting.

All trench box components have arrived and are being assembled on site. Steel plates are also available to safely cover the trench each evening when work is paused.

With this repair project now underway – and demolition continuing nearby for the Parking Deck and Police Department Expansion – this area of downtown is experiencing a high level of construction activity. Please use alternate routes unless you are visiting one of the local businesses in the area.

Thank you for your continued patience as we work to restore and improve this section of downtown. Check back regularly for project updates.

Downtown Statesville

Update: May 13, 2025

The City of Statesville is continuing to move forward with the emergency infrastructure repair at the intersection of Tradd Street and E. Front Street. Country Boy Landscaping & Construction was awarded the contract following a formal bid process, and the contract was approved by City Council at the May 5, 2025 meeting.

At this time, the contract has not yet been executed. The City is currently awaiting receipt of the required performance bonds from the contractor. Once the bonds are received, anticipated by next week, the City will execute the contract. This will trigger the official 45-day timeline for project completion.

To expedite the project and minimize disruption, there will be no work hour restrictions. Due to the commercial nature of the area and the urgency to restore full access, the contractor will be allowed to work extended hours as needed to complete the repairs as quickly and safely as possible.

This critical repair project will address underground failures in the storm and sanitary sewer systems, improve public safety, and reduce the risk of future flooding in the area. We appreciate the public’s continued patience and cooperation as we move closer to the start of construction.

Once a winner is selected, city staff will present the bid to Council for approval at the next regular meeting.

Once the contract is executed, the selected contractor will submit the required bonds, and the City will issue a formal Notice to Proceed. While this phase typically takes about three weeks, the city will work as quickly as possible to move through this process and minimize any delays. After receiving the Notice to Proceed, the contractor will have 45 calendar days to complete the work.
