PUBLIC NOTICE: City of Statesville Reminds Candidates of Campaign Sign Regulations Ahead of November Election

Last Updated 7/3/2025Posted in Legal Notices, Latest City News, Homepage

As candidates prepare for the upcoming municipal election this November, the City of Statesville is reminding all individuals planning to run for city office – and their supporters – of the rules and regulations governing the placement of political signs within the city limits.

Political signs are a common sight during election season, but to maintain safety, visibility, and aesthetics throughout the city, specific guidelines must be followed as outlined in Section 6.07 of the City’s Unified Development Code.

Political Signs ARE Allowed:

  • On private property, with permission from the property owner
  • In the front and side yards of homes and businesses, with the property owner’s permission
  • Inside storefront windows, with the property owner’s permission

Political Signs ARE NOT Allowed:

  • If they exceed 15 square feet in size in residential areas
  • In any City-maintained right-of-way
  • In the Downtown streetscape area
  • In the landscaped median on East Broad Street

Candidates and campaign workers are encouraged to consult the City Street map on our website – https://www.statesvillenc.net/streets – to determine whether a roadway is City- maintained or maintained by the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT).

All political signs must be removed within five (5) days following the election or conclusion of the campaign. Any signs found in violation—particularly those located in the City’s right-of- way—will be removed by Ordinance Enforcement Officers. Removed signs can be collected from City Hall during business hours, Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

For questions or more information, please contact Shane Harris, Code Enforcement Officer, at 704-878-3575 or by email here.
