Statesville Kicks Off Child Abuse Prevention Month with “Tie-A-Tree” Initiative

On Wednesday, April 1, 2026, the City of Statesville joined communities across Iredell County in launching Child Abuse Prevention Month with the annual “Tie-A-Tree” initiative. Held at the corner of Tradd and Water Street near the Iredell County Public Library in Statesville, the event brought together local leaders, partner agencies, and community members in a shared commitment to protecting children.

This marks the fifth year that Pharos Parenting, Dove House Children's Advocacy Center, NC Guardian ad Litem, Iredell County Partnership for Young Children, and the Iredell County Department of Social Services have collaborated to raise awareness throughout April. The “Tie-A-Tree” effort includes placing blue ribbons on trees across Statesville, Troutman, Mooresville, and Taylorsville - serving as a visible reminder of the community’s role in preventing child abuse.

Statesville Mayor Doug Hendrix addressed attendees, emphasizing that prevention requires action, awareness, and strong support systems for families. “Prevention is not just a word. It is action. It is awareness. It is making sure families have the support they need before a crisis ever happens,” Mayor Hendrix shared. He highlighted the importance of collaboration among local organizations and the power of community partnerships in keeping children safe. The mayor also read a proclamation recognizing Child Abuse Prevention Month, which will be formally presented at the April 13, 2026, City Council meeting.

Members of the Statesville Police Department Investigations Unit were also in attendance, reinforcing the City’s ongoing commitment to child safety and advocacy.

Throughout April, the blue ribbons displayed across the county will stand as a symbol of hope, protection, and a shared responsibility to care for one another, especially the youngest members of our community.
