The City of Statesville Planning Board and Board of Adjustment Seek ETJ Representatives

Last Updated 4/7/2025Posted in Latest City News, Homepage, Board of Adjustment

The City of Statesville is currently seeking volunteers from its Extra-Territorial Jurisdiction (ETJ) to serve on the Planning Board and Board of Adjustment. The ETJ includes areas outside of the city limits that still fall within Statesville’s planning and zoning jurisdiction.

As the City continues to grow, it is important for residents in these areas to have a voice in shaping future development. “Residents living in the ETJ may not be able to vote in City elections, but their input is still critical,” said Sherry Ashley, Statesville Planning Director. “Having ETJ representation on these boards ensures that the interests and perspectives of these communities are included in our long-range planning efforts.”

The Statesville Planning Board reviews rezonings, zoning text changes, major development proposals, and subdivisions, and makes recommendations to City Council. The board meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 6:00 p.m. in City Hall. Members serve three-year terms and are appointed by both the City Council and the Iredell County Board of Commissioners.

The Board of Adjustment hears zoning appeals and variance requests in a quasi-judicial format, where decisions are based on sworn testimony and evidence. This board meets as needed on the first Tuesday of the month at 12:30 p.m. Members serve three-year terms and are appointed by both the City Council and the Iredell County Board of Commissioners.

Interested individuals can apply online by completing a volunteer application at www.statesvillenc.net/volunteer. Qualified applicants will be submitted to the Iredell County Board of Commissioners for formal approval.
