Clothes Dryer Safety

Did you know that the leading cause of home clothes dryer fires is failure to clean them?  Here are some important tips from the Statesville Fire Department on how to prevent clothes dryer fires and keep your home safe:

  1. Regularly Clean the Lint Filter: After every load, be sure to clean the lint filter. Lint buildup in the filter can restrict airflow and become a fire hazard.
  2. Inspect and Clean Ventilation Systems: Ensure that your dryer's exhaust vent and ducts are clear of lint and debris. Regularly check and clean these components to maintain proper airflow.
  3. Replace Plastic or Vinyl Ducts: If your dryer is connected to plastic or vinyl ducts, consider replacing them with rigid metal ducts. Metal ducts are less likely to trap lint and are a safer option.
  4. Keep the Area Around the Dryer Clear: Avoid piling up clothes, boxes, or other flammable materials near the dryer. Ensure there's ample space for proper ventilation.
  5. Schedule Professional Maintenance: It's a good idea to have your dryer professionally serviced and inspected regularly. A technician can check for any potential issues and ensure everything is in working order.
  6. Use Dryer Only When Home: Avoid running your dryer when you're not at home or while you're sleeping. In case of a malfunction or fire, you'll be able to respond quickly.
  7. Install a Smoke Alarm: Make sure your home is equipped with working smoke alarms, especially near the laundry area. Test them regularly to ensure they are functioning correctly.
  8. Know How to Respond to a Fire: If a fire does occur in your dryer, never use water to extinguish it. Instead, have a fire extinguisher nearby and use it to put out the flames. If the fire is uncontrollable, evacuate your home and call 911 immediately.

By following these safety tips, you can significantly reduce the risk of a clothes dryer fire in your home. Stay safe, and don't forget to share these important reminders with your family and friends. Together, we can prevent dryer fires and protect our homes and loved ones.
