Protect Your Pipes During Prolonged Freezing Temperatures

Last Updated 1/29/2026Posted in Latest City News, Homepage

Statesville residents should prepare now for an extended stretch of very cold weather.

According to the National Weather Service, temperatures are expected to remain continuously below freezing from Friday evening through at least Monday afternoon as a strong arctic front moves through our area. When freezing temperatures last for several days, the risk of frozen and burst water pipes increases significantly.

Burst pipes can cause costly damage to homes and may lead to temporary water service interruptions. Taking a few simple steps now can help protect your home and prevent problems later.

How to Protect Your Pipes

Inside your home:

  • Let faucets drip slowly (hot and cold) to keep water moving
  • Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air to circulate
  • Keep your thermostat set to the same temperature day and night
  • If you’re leaving home, do not turn the heat off

Outside your home

  • Disconnect garden hoses
  • Cover or insulate outdoor faucets and spigots
  • Drain and shut off irrigation systems if possible
  • If Pipes Freeze Turn on the faucet and slowly warm the pipe using a hair dryer or warm towels Never use an open flame or torch If a pipe bursts, shut off your home’s main water valve immediately and contact a plumber

Preparing now can help prevent damage and keep water service running smoothly during the cold snap.
