Sparky the Fire Dog Turns 75: A Legacy of Fire Safety

On March 18, 2026, we celebrate a very special milestone - Sparky the Fire Dog’s 75th birthday. For generations, Sparky has been a trusted and familiar face in fire safety education, helping children and adults alike learn how to stay safe at home and in their communities.

Since his debut in 1951, Sparky has worked alongside fire departments, educators, and safety advocates to share life-saving messages that remain just as important today as they were decades ago.

While progress has been made in reducing fires, the risks are still very real - especially in the home, where most fire-related deaths occur.

Timeless Fire Safety Messages from Sparky

As we celebrate Sparky’s 75 years of service, it’s the perfect time to revisit the simple but critical safety tips he has shared for generations:

Install and Maintain Smoke Alarms

Make sure you have smoke alarms on every level of your home, inside each bedroom, and near sleeping areas. Test them once a month using the test button to ensure they are working properly.

Create a Home Escape Plan

Every household should have a fire escape plan with two ways out of every room. Draw a map of your home and identify all doors and windows that can be used as exits.

Choose a Meeting Place

Designate a safe meeting spot outside your home - such as a mailbox or tree - where everyone will gather after escaping. This helps ensure everyone is accounted for.

Practice Your Plan

Practice your home escape plan at least twice a year with everyone in your household, including children. Practicing helps ensure everyone knows what to do when seconds matter most.

Remember the Basics

Sparky has helped generations remember key fire safety actions like:

    • Stop, Drop, and Roll
    • Get Out and Stay Out
    • Call 9-1-1 in an emergency
    • Know two ways out

Continuing Sparky’s Mission

Sparky’s legacy is built on making fire safety simple, memorable, and accessible. His message is clear - small steps can make a big difference in protecting your home and loved ones.

As we celebrate 75 years of Sparky the Fire Dog, take a moment to check your smoke alarms, review your escape plan, and talk with your family about fire safety. These actions can save lives.

From all of us at the Statesville Fire Department, happy 75th birthday, Sparky - and thank you for helping keep generations safe!
