Community Invited to Celebrate the Garfield Green Street National Historic District

The Statesville African American Heritage Preservation Commission and the City of Statesville invite the community to celebrate the Garfield Green Street National Historic District on Friday, June 19, 2026, from 12 to 3 p.m. along Garfield Street and at Garfield Park.

The event will recognize the neighborhood’s rich history, cultural significance, and lasting impact on the Statesville community following its listing on the National Register of Historic Places.

A special unveiling of the historic district sign will take place at 1 p.m. at the corner of Salisbury Road and Garfield Street.

The celebration will also feature local vendors, food trucks, a headstone preservation presentation, and music by a live DJ at Garfield Park.

“This district tells an important story about the people, families, churches, businesses, and traditions that helped shape Statesville,” said Councilwoman Lisa Pearson. “This celebration is an opportunity to honor that history, preserve it for future generations, and bring the community together to recognize the significance of the Garfield Green Street neighborhood.”

The following roads will be closed during the event:

  • Elm Street from Chambers Street to Garfield Street
  • Garfield Street from Green Street to Salisbury Road

Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead and use alternate routes.

Parking for the event will be available at the following locations:

  • Elm Street (handicap parking only)
  • First Baptist Church, 464 Garfield Street
  • Calvary Presbyterian Church, 531 S. Green Street
  • Scotts Chapel, 316 Chambers Street
  • Mt. Pleasant Church, 537 S. Center Street
  • Morningside School, 410 Garfield Street

Those interested in setting up as a vendor or community partner may contact Councilwoman Lisa Pearson at 704-437-6589 or on our website here.
