SFD Special Team Training at Rocky Face Park

Members of the Statesville Fire Department's Technical Rescue Team gathered at Rocky Face Park in Alexander County for a specialized training session earlier this week. The focus of this training was on rope rescue skills and the use of a new piece of equipment known as the TerrAdaptor.

The TerrAdaptor proved to be a game-changer during our training. This device allows users to create an artificial high directional anchor (AHD), expanding our capabilities for safe and efficient rope rescues in challenging environments. The ability to establish a reliable anchor point is paramount in technical rescue operations.

Simulated Rescue Scenario

To put our skills and the TerrAdaptor to the test, we simulated a rescue scenario involving a fallen hiker stranded on a rock ledge. Our Technical Rescue Team sprang into action, and here's how the operation unfolded:

Initial Assessment: Upon arrival at the scene, our team quickly assessed the situation, identified the victim (a rescue mannequin), and determined the best course of action.

Anchor Setup: Using the TerrAdaptor, we established a secure Artificial High Directional anchor point, ensuring the safety of both rescuers and the victim.

Rappelling: With the anchor point in place, our team members rappelled down to the "patient" on the rock ledge. This phase demanded precise coordination and technical proficiency to descend safely and swiftly.

Patient Packaging: Upon reaching the victim, our responders swiftly assessed and packaged the "patient" in a stokes basket. This step is crucial for ensuring the victim's safety during the descent.

Lowering to Safety: Using our established AHD anchor, we carefully lowered the stokes basket with the "patient" to the ground. This required a coordinated effort among our team members to maintain control throughout the descent.

Key Takeaways

The TerrAdaptor is a valuable addition to our rescue toolkit, enabling us to create secure AHD anchors swiftly and effectively.

Technical rope rescue skills are essential for safe and successful operations, especially in challenging terrain like rocky ledges.

Team coordination and communication are paramount in all rescue scenarios, ensuring the safety of both rescuers and victims.

Our Special Team Training at Rocky Face Park was a success, thanks to the dedication and expertise of our Technical Rescue Team and the innovative capabilities of the TerrAdaptor. We are now better equipped to respond to rope rescue emergencies in various challenging environments, further enhancing our ability to serve and protect our community.
