Statesville's City Council is made up of the mayor, six (6) ward seats, and two (2) at-large seats. Meetings are held on the first and third Mondays of each month at 7:00pm in the Council Chambers of the City Hall building located at 227 S. Center Street. The agenda is released on the Wednesday before the scheduled meeting by the City Clerk. On the second meeting of each month, thirty minutes are set aside for the public to address Council about any issue.

Leah Gaines-Messick serves as the City Attorney for the City of Statesville. She is the legal adviser for all officials, officers, and departments of the City and represents the City in litigation and proceedings, including the prosecution of cases. Work involves drafting and reviewing ordinances, resolutions, policies and procedures, and contracts prior to consideration by the City Council to ensure compliance with state, federal, and local laws.

In order to provide the public with an opportunity to address City Council during its regular council meetings, a Public Comment Period will be held at the beginning of the second regular Council Meeting each month. Speakers cannot call ahead to sign-up, but must sign-up 30 minutes prior to the meeting.
