Flood Watch Issued for Iredell County: Prepare for Heavy Rainfall

Storm Update | Thursday August 8, 2024, at 5:30pm
We currently have less than 200 customers without power. City Electric crews and contract crews are working together to replace five poles that were knocked down by a tree earlier today (pictured) on East Broad Street at the intersection of East End Avenue. We expect to have power restored by 10 PM.

Street crews are still clearing a few more fallen trees and limbs. Remember, trees are cut and moved to the side of the road so crews can quickly move to the next area needing assistance. Please be cautious if driving tonight.

A flood watch is still in effect through tomorrow morning.

Please remember:
▶️ To report downed trees, call the non-emergency line for Statesville Police at 704-878-3406.
▶️ To report downed power lines, call 911.
▶️ If you have a power outage, use the outage line at 704-878-3479.

Stay safe and thank you for your patience.

Storm Update | Thursday, August 8, 2024, at 10:15a

Flash Flood Warning: Statesville is currently under a flash flood warning until 2 PM. Heavy rainfall has caused significant water accumulation in low-lying areas.

Current Conditions:

  • Trees Down: Several trees are down throughout the city, causing obstructions and potential hazards.
  • Power Outages: Approximately 2,000 customers are experiencing power outages. Crews are working diligently to restore power as quickly as possible.

Safety Recommendations:

  1. Remain Indoors: Stay indoors and avoid travel if possible. Flooded streets and fallen trees pose serious risks.
  2. Avoid Flooded Areas: Do not attempt to walk or drive through flooded areas. Just a few inches of moving water can knock you off your feet and cause vehicle stalling.

City Services:

  • Emergency response teams are actively addressing storm-related incidents.

Updates will be provided as the situation develops.

Statesville, North Carolina | Wednesday, August 7, 2024

The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for Iredell County, effective from late tonight through Friday morning. Tropical Cyclone Debby is expected to bring excessive rainfall, creating the potential for flash flooding.

What to Expect

  • Excessive Rainfall: The storm may bring 4 to 7 inches of rain along and to the east of the Interstate 77 corridor by Friday morning. In some areas, even higher amounts are possible.
  • Flood Risks: Excessive runoff could result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying areas. Street flooding is also a concern.
  • Safety Precautions: Do not walk or drive through flood waters. Remember the important safety rule: "Turn around, don't drown!"

City Preparations

The City of Statesville is taking proactive steps to prepare for the storm:

  • Water/Sewer Division: Fueling up and preparing the treatment plants.
  • Fleet Management: Ordering 1,600 gallons of diesel to be delivered before the storm.
  • Stormwater Department: Checking and cleaning storm drains on city-maintained roads to remove debris.
  • Fire Department: Preparing and staging the Swift Water team at Old Station 1.
  • Street Department: Ensuring chainsaws and other equipment are ready.
  • Electric Department: Stocking trucks and conducting preliminary tree trimming.
