Friends, family, Community Appearance Commission members, City Council, city staff, and longtime patrons gathered to celebrate the couple and the impact they’ve had on downtown Statesville.

Since opening 220 Café in 2010, Simko and Walker have been part of downtown Statesville’s story. They’ve supported local artists and musicians, partnered with community organizations, and created a space that feels welcoming to both residents and visitors.

“It’s my honor to recognize this year’s Mayor’s Cup recipient, 220 Café, and its owners, Kelli Simko and John Walker,” said Mayor Doug Hendrix. “When they opened their doors, they became part of downtown at a time when things looked very different. Over the years, they’ve helped create a place where people feel at home.”

Through the years, the Walkers have stayed involved in the community, supporting events like Carolina BalloonFest and working alongside local groups and nonprofits. Their restaurant continues to highlight local talent and bring people together.

“The Mayor’s Cup recognizes people who take pride in this community and invest in its future,” Hendrix said. “John and Kelli do that every day.”

Community Appearance Commission Chair Sherry Harris said the couple’s dedication to downtown Statesville made 220 Café a natural choice for this year’s award.

“220 Café has become more than just a restaurant,” Harris said. “Kelli and John have helped create an atmosphere downtown that is welcoming, vibrant, and community focused. Their continued support of local events, artists, and organizations has made a lasting impact on Statesville.”

Since opening, 220 Café has earned multiple recognitions, including being named Small Business of the Year twice and receiving OpenTable’s Diners’ Choice Award each year from 2016 through 2025.
