City Manager May 2026 Update to City Council
Ron Smith provided his monthly update to City Council on May 11, 2026, highlighting progress on major City projects, infrastructure improvements, public safety initiatives, recreation projects, and staff updates across the City of Statesville.

Police Department Expansion Construction Update
Tradd Street is planned to reopen this week. For the Police Department expansion project, the call center is expected to be completed by the end of May. The parking garage is currently planned to open in mid-summer. At this point, parking is not expected to be paid parking, other than for the apartments.
Grading at Fire Station 5 is complete. All house upfits have been completed, and the apparatus bay is currently in production.
The City continues working on the schematic drawing plan for the Municipal Operations Center project. Staff are also continuing to work with Davenport Finance Advisors to develop preliminary financing information. Partial funding is anticipated in FY 2027.
Statesville Recreation & Economic Vitality (REV) Projects
Statesville Event Center: Equipment for the Event Center sound and video upgrades has arrived, and installation is scheduled to begin this week.
Kimbrough Park Renovation: The Kimbrough Park shelter project is complete.
Newtonville Community Park Revitalization: Playground installation is complete Pickleball courts are underway Disc golf design is imminent Parking lot design is underway
Installation of the 20-inch water main has been completed from the Water Treatment Plant to the intersection of North Meeting and Water Streets. Temporary paving has also been completed, with only a few cross-street cuts remaining.
This section of the project was approved to be placed into service on April 2, and waterline and service cutovers are now underway. Customers affected by the transition to the new line will receive advance notification prior to service changes. Final paving repairs will be completed once all changeovers are finished.
Phase 2 construction activities have also started along U.S. 21, Meeting Street, and south of the railroad.
Stage 3 Drought Classification: Extreme Drought
The City began enforcing water restrictions for D-3 drought conditions on May 4. To date, no warnings or citations have been issued. The burn ban has been lifted. Residents are encouraged to check the City website for additional details regarding drought restrictions.
Public Works Update
The sidewalk project on Alexander Street has now been poured to Wilson Street.
The fence and wall on Center Street will be partially demolished and rebuilt due to workmanship issues. The contractor is expected to begin work this week.
New crosswalk signs for West Broad Street are expected to arrive within two weeks.
Statesville Regional Airport Updates
The Apron Expansion project grant will go before the DOT Board in June.
The City has applied for a grant to replace the runway approach lights damaged by the Biffle crash.
Geotechnical surveys are underway for the Southwest Taxiway.
Statesville Planning Department Update
The Planning Department issued 62 permits this month, bringing the year-to-date total to 430 permits.
A total of 282 code compliance cases have been opened, with 43 cases closed. Six new minimum housing cases were opened.
NCDOT is accepting bids on May 12 for the Five Points Intersection project, which is expected to break ground in July and take approximately 18 months to complete.
